PUBERTY.....PART I

WHAT IS PUBERTY

Our bodies are constantly changing from the day we are born until the day we die. Puberty is the period of time when children begin to mature biologically, psychologically, socially and cognitively. Girls start to grow into women and boys into men.

This process can take a year or even six years. This time period is when a child's body takes on those characteristics that define it sexually. Both males & females bodies will each take on a different shape. Keep in mind that everyone matures at their own pace, but eventually we all catch up. Puberty leads to adolescence.

Adolescence is a transitional period between childhood and adulthood. The changes of adolescence do not occur on a strict timeline; instead the changes occur at different times according to a unique internal calendar known only to the person. Adolescence can be a very difficult time. You are no longer a child, but you are not an adult yet either.

WHAT CAUSES ALLTHE CHANGES

Hormones cause these changes. The brain knows when the body is nearing sexual maturity. It releases chemicals called hormones. Different hormones are responsible for different changes in you. As you get nearer to puberty, the brain and pituitary gland release hormones that regulate the reproductive organs of both males and females. These hormones stimulate the ovaries of girls to produce other hormones called estrogen and progesterone, and the testes of boys to produce testosterone.

Growth hormones are also stimulated -- they make the body grow larger; sometimes very quickly. Arms and legs get longer and internal body organs get larger. Your body is experiencing a major growth surge. This surge lasts about two to three years.

Some people can grow even four inches in one year during this growth period known as the “growth spurt”. When this growth period is over you will be at your adult height. As your body grows taller your body will also change in other ways also. You will gain weight, and your overall shape will change. Boy's shoulders will widen, and their bodies will become more muscular. At the same time their voices will become deeper, their genitals will enlarge. All these changes mean that the body is developing correctly during puberty.

GIRLS usually become curvier during this time, they tend to gain weight on their hips, (some don't) and their breasts develop. Girls often will notice an increase in overall body fat. If you ever have questions or concerns about your weight, talk it over with your health care provider or parent. After one to two years after a girl's breasts start to develop they will experience their first menstrual period. One more change that lets you know that puberty is happening. We talk more about the menstrual cycle in detail in our “Menstrual Cycle” section.

BOYS, between the ages of twelve and seventeen will see their shoulders broaden, the muscles strengthen and the genitals develop and darken to become covered with pubic hair. The larynx lengthen and the voice 'breaks' on its way to becoming 'deeper'. Spontaneous erections start to occur (sometimes embarrassing); nocturnal emissions of sperm are also a sign of sexual maturity. See 'Wet Dreams' for more information on those.

SIGNS OF PUBERTY

One of the first signs that puberty has begun is hair growth. Boys and girls begin to grow hair under their arms and in the pubic area. As puberty progresses it will become thicker, darker and heavier. Boys will begin to grow hair on their faces.

Another part of puberty is acne. It is caused by all the hormones that are present during puberty. (See our Acne section for more on this annoying problem.) As you enter puberty, the puberty hormones affect the glands that are under your arms and cause you to have "body odor". This is normal and everybody gets it, it can be more intense for some teens, and often you are just unlucky if you have a problem with body odor.

Hormones are also responsible for the emotional changes that take place during puberty. You may feel confused, have emotional outbursts, feel sad, or have strong emotions or mood that change quickly. You might be overly sensitive or easily lose your temper. There are those crazy hormones working on you again.

If you feel really out of control or depressed, consult with your health care provider.

Also useful are the following articles: Stress, Stress Skills, and Stress Management. These pages have all kinds of helpful ways to deal with the stress of this trying time.

WHEN DOES PUBERTY HAPPEN

FOR GIRLS puberty can begin between the ages of NINE TO THIRTEEN.

FOR BOYS, it will be around age TEN TO FOURTEEN

The whole process can last from only one year to as many as six years. Lots of things are happening. A boy is becoming a man, a girl a woman. Puberty also brings adolescence -- those new thoughts and feelings. Sometimes these physical and emotional changes don't happen at the same time. A girl or boy can possibly mature emotionally before they do physically. The opposite is also true. This can be a very difficult time. Sometimes kids who start to develop early are not prepared for the myriad changes going on in their bodies. Boys also feel that their bodies are out of proportion. These feelings can make one very self-conscious and even feel very socially isolated.

Common Concerns of Adolescents

Common concerns identified by adolescents include conflicts with parents, conflicts with siblings, concerns about peers and peer relationships, concerns about school and in today’s world, concerns about their physical safety.

Personal identity is an overwhelming concern expressed by adolescents. Parents of adolescents may also have concerns about their child during this period. Common concerns related to the adolescent’s behavior include: risk-taking behavior, rebelliousness, wasting time, mood swings, drug experimentation, school problems, psychosomatic complaints and sexual activity. Communication between family members can help make this transition a much less stressful period! For more on mental health topics, see the Mental Health area.

If you are going through these changes and finding it difficult, just remember that soon you will be a young man or a young woman. Talk to your parents about how you are feeling, they went through this period of change too (believe it or not), or talk to a friend. Your friends are probably going through the same thing. Sometimes it helps to discuss the changes that are going on in your body, this way you won't feel strange or alone with the changes in your voice, mood, body and so on. I know it might be hard to believe this, but your parents went through puberty too once.

GIRLS:

These questions are frequently asked by female readers. This table is here to provide information for girls and their parents. A lot of people seem so overly concerned about what is “normal” for themselves or for their child. If you think something is wrong, consult with your health care provider.

Puberty in girls is a process that varies from person to person. There is a wide range of 'normal' starting times, and the onset time varies in different ethnic groups. For example, it may occur between the ages of 8 and 14 in Caucasian girls, and may begin as early as 7 years of age in African American girls.

Puberty is outwardly manifested by two main sets of changes: Rapid increases in height and weight, referred to as the height and weight spurts. The development of breasts, and pubic and underarm (axillary) hair.

BOYS:
These questions are frequently asked by young male readers. This table was created to provide information for guys and or their parents. Everyone seems so overly concerned about what is “normal” for themselves or for their child. Most of us, sooner or later go through puberty.

Puberty is the period of time when sexual characteristics develop and sexual organs mature. There is also a significant growth spurt and the timing of that 'spurt' can vary from person to person. Along with sexual maturation and development, a wide range of emotional changes also take place. Some boys go through this period very easily and for others it can be more difficult.

GIRLS:

MENSTRUATION

What You Need To Know About Menstruation

If you're a teenage girl you probably have started having a period. If you have not, you might be anxious about the subject or a bit concerned. This whole menstruation thing might seem a bit mysterious, it is to many young women. It's actually very complex, but interesting too.

Menstruation is the outward proof that a girl is becoming a woman. Having a period is your body's way of saying it’s functioning properly.

During puberty, hormones are released from the brain that stimulate the ovaries. The ovaries then produce estrogen and progesterone -- hormones that cause the eggs in the ovaries to mature so the woman can become pregnant when she chooses to. Here's how the process goes:

Every month, one egg leaves one of the ovaries on its way to the uterus via the fallopian tubes. Meanwhile, in preparation for the egg, the uterus starts to develop a thicker lining and it’s walls become cushiony (the endometrial lining). If the egg reaches the uterus and is fertilized by a sperm cell, it attaches to this cushiony wall.

Most of the time the egg just passes right through without fertilization. Since the uterus no longer needs the extra blood and tissue which made up the walls thick, it sheds them by way of the vagina. This cycle will happen nearly every month until the ovaries stop releasing eggs, usually several decades later. (Menopause).

Periods are different for every woman. Some girls start menstruation when they're 9 or 10; some in their late teens. The length of the cycle also varies. Some periods last longer than 28 days, some shorter. If you have just begun your menstruation, your body will need time to regulate itself to these changes. Your periods might be a bit erratic at first. You may have two cycles in one month and miss having one the next month. How long your period lasts also varies . Some girls have their periods for only 3 or 4 days, others as long as a week. The menstrual flow of blood can vary from woman to woman also.

Some girls may have body and or mood changes around the time of their period. Menstrual cramps are pretty common during the first few days of your period. These are most likely caused by prostagladins. Prostaglandins causes the muscles of the uterus to contract. These cramps tend to become less uncomfortable and sometimes even disappear completely as a girl gets older. Over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can often give relief; if not, a health care provider can help. If your cramps are very severe, see a gynecologist.

As your period approaches, you may experience premenstrual syndrome (PMS). You may find your emotions amplified during this time. Many women get depressed, irritated, angry, and others cry more than usual or get cravings for certain foods. PMS may be related to changes in hormones. Hormone levels rise and fall during a menstrual cycle, affecting the way a female feels both mentally and physically.

Emotions can become more intense than usual, and many women may feel bloated because of water retention. When your period begins, PMS usually goes away. You may also have acne flare-ups.

Periods are a complex part of puberty, but also your body's way of telling you it is functioning properly and you have taken good care of it. You can still exercise, swim and do everything you enjoy. If you have any questions about periods, ask a parent, health teacher, health care provider, or nurse. You can also ask friends or sisters who have already had their periods. In time you will see that periods are a normal and routine part of your life.

The Menstrual Cycle

The "typical" menstrual cycle occurs regularly over 28 days. Most women have cycles with an interval that lasts from 21 to 35 days. Frequently cycles are unusually short or long during adolescence.

THE FIRST HALF OF THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE (Day 1 to About Day 14 in a 28-Day Cycle)

The Menstrual Phase

The first day of your menstrual period is considered Day 1 of your cycle. The menstrual phase includes your period. During this time, the endometrium (the built-up lining of the uterus) is shed, along with a little blood. Many of the problems that women experience with their menstrual cycle occur during this phase. For example, some women experience menstrual disorders such as dysmenorrhea (painful periods) or menorrhagia (unusually heavy periods).

The Follicular/Proliferate Phase

During the proliferate phase, the body produces a hormone called follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Follicle-stimulating hormone promotes the growth of a follicle (egg sac) within the ovary. An ovum (egg) matures in the follicle during the proliferative phase. FSH also stimulates the ovary to produce increasing amounts of estrogen. In turn, the estrogen causes endometrial tissue to build up (or proliferate), lining the interior of the uterus.

THE MIDPOINT OF THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE (About Day 14 in a 28-Day Cycle)

The mature ovum bursts from the follicle about midway (approximately 2 weeks before onset of next menstrual period) through the menstrual cycle. This process is known as ovulation. The ovum then travels from the ovary down the fallopian tube, and into the uterus.

The Luteal/Secretory Phase

Once the ovum has been released, the follicle becomes a sac known as the corpus luteum ("yellow body," because it contains yellowish, fatty matter). A hormone called luteinizing hormone (LH) causes the corpus luteum to grow and to secrete progesterone, another female hormone.

During the secretory phase, progesterone makes the endometrial lining stronger and spongy in texture. Progesterone also stimulates glands in the endometrium. These glands produce uterine fluid, and their purpose is to support embryonic development if fertilization has occurred at or around the time of ovulation. It is in this phase of the menstrual cycle that women who suffer from premenstrual syndrome (PMS) may begin to experience their symptoms. Generally symptoms are worse during the last seven to ten days of the cycle, ending at or soon after the start of the menstrual period. In a woman who hasn't become pregnant, the level of progesterone peaks about a week after ovulation and then begins to drop along with the estrogen level. The flow of blood to the endometrium decreases, and its upper portion is broken down and shed during menstruation. At the same time, the corpus luteum withers.

The dip in estrogen and progesterone at the end of the cycle help let the body know that it's time to start the cycle all over again. The menstrual cycle doesn't have to be a drag, it actually shows how complex your body is and a sign that it is functioning properly! Congratulations, you are a woman and being a woman is terrific!

The Endometrial Cycle chart shows how the endometrial lining builds up during the normal menstrual cycle and then is broken down and shed during menstruation (menses). Meanwhile at the same time back at the Ovarian Cycle chart, the corpus luteum withers.

Aren't women amazing! The menstrual cycle is actually a very cool and very complex process that results from the many parts of the body working together. The brain, the ovaries, the adrenal glands and even the thyroid, all have to come together with their different hormonal and chemical influences. I guess you could say it is kind of like a small orchestra in your body.

BOYS

SPERM CELL OR SPERMATOZOA

The mature sperm cell (spermatozoa) is 0.05 milliliters long. It consists of a head, body and tail. The head is covered by the ac cap and contains a nucleus of dense genetic material from the 23 chromosomes.

It is attached from the neck to the body containing mitochondria that supply the energy for the sperm's activity. The tail is made of protein fibers that contract on alternative sides, giving a characteristic wavelike movement that drives the sperm through the seminal fluid, which also supplies additional energy.

Some sperm have two heads or two tails and if the testes are too warm they may die or spermatogenesis may not occur.

Sperm swim at a rate of about 3mm (0.12 inches) per minute. That’s an average, it’s different for every guy. Some sperm cells are 'better' swimmers than others. Why? They need to wave their tales more than 1000 times just to swim 1.25 cm or a half an inch. Why some are better than others is still a mystery to many fertility specialists. Anyway...

Sperm cells are made in the testes where it takes about 72 days for one sperm to grow. Sperm production requires a temperature which is three to five degrees below body temperature. The scrotum has a built-in thermostat, which keeps the sperm at the correct temperature while they’re being stored. If it becomes too cool on the outside, the scrotum will bring the testicles closer to the body for warmth as you probably know from jumping into a cold pool of water or ocean. That’s why the testes hang away from the body -- so sperm can develop at the temperature they need. (95° - 97° F or 35° to 36° C)

Semen contains small amounts of more than thirty elements, including fructose, ascorbic acid, cholesterol, creatine, citric acid, lactic acid, nitrogen, vitamin B12, and various salts and enzymes. Let’s go back to the inside of the head of the sperm. All normal cells have 46 chromosomes but sperm have half that number or, 23. If and when the sperm joins ups with the female’s, egg (ovum) which also has 23 chromosomes, together they add up to 46 chromosomes. The middle section controls the sperms activities. The sperm or (spermatozoa -- which are the little swimming critters) make up only about 5% of what a man ejaculates each time he ejaculates. This represents about 100 to 400 million of them! Therefore, they are very, very, very tiny, in fact a single sperm is the smallest cell in the body. The rest of what a man ejaculates in his ejaculate, which is about a teaspoonful (5 ml), is made up of water, sugar, protein, vitamin C, zinc, and prostaglandins. Semen or seminal fluid is the mixture of sperm and the secretions of the seminal vesicles, prostate gland, and the bulbourethral glands. Over the course of a guy’s life, he’ll produce more than 12 trillion sperm. There’s some sexual health trivia for you.

GIRLS :

The Vagina

Your vagina; get to know it better.

The vagina is the opening that is located directly below the urethral opening (where you pee from). The opening is called an orifice, as are other openings in your body. Directly outside of the vaginal opening are the labia minor, the smooth inner lips of the vulva. Outside of the inner lips are the labia majora, the fleshier outer lips that are typically covered in hair. Females tend to know less about their genitals than males because they cannot see them as easily - fairly obvious. There is nothing wrong with using a mirror and taking a look at what is “down there”. It’s easy to see if you put a mirror between your legs and look, especially if you are trying to insert a tampon for the first time.

The clitoris is a sensitive organ and it's function is to provide sexual pleasure. It is a hard round 'button' at the top of the vulva. It’s often so concealed that it may only to viewed when the lips of the vagina are separated. It is structurally connected to the labia minora or inner lips of the vagina. The visible glans of the clitoris, which is hooded by a prepuce -- (formed by the meeting of the labia minora) -- is only the outward and visible part of a much more extensive structure of erectile tissue. The clitoral structure surrounds and extends into the vagina. The structure contains erectile tissue, very similar to the male penis, so when a women gets sexually aroused, it engorges with blood. The clitoris is densely packed with nerve endings, while similar in number to the penis, they are much more concentrated and closer together.

The role of the clitoris in orgasm has been the subject of heated controversy for years. There is even controversy as to its pronunciation, whether it should be 'clitt-oris' or 'cli-toris'. Dictionaries vary and some list both as correct. However, this infers to some that this variation may cause hesitation in referring to this organ openly while speaking to others, (even to your health care provider).

When a woman is sexually aroused, the vagina begins to produce lubrication to aid in penetration. Your bartholin glands produce that lubrication. Most vaginas are only four inches in length. At the top of the vagina is what kind of feels like a semi-hard round ball. This is your cervix, the 'neck' of your uterus. In the middle of the cervix is a small round opening, called the os, that leads to the uterus. The os is the small opening through which menstrual blood flows from the uterus into the vagina. This is the same small opening that expands during childbirth. This is also where cells for a pap smear will be taken to make sure they are healthy. Many females have very sensitive cervixes, some do not.

Keep in mind that the vagina is a 'potential' space. The walls of the vagina are normally in contact with each other. In other words, they are touching unless something is inserted between them; contrary to what most anatomy illustrations like the one here illustrates. This drawing looks like the vagina is an 'open' canal. It is not. The vaginal opening is normally closed. It’s important to realize that the vagina isn't a hole or cavity inside the body. When something enters the vagina, the body must make room for it, no matter how small or large it may be.

How to care for your vagina?

The vaginal walls are continually producing secretions necessary to provide lubrication, to cleanse the vagina, and to maintain the proper acidity to prevent infection. You will notice during different part of your menstrual cycle that your vaginal discharge will vary, (see Menstrual Cycle for more on that). The vagina tends to be fairly acidic (sperm tend to be more of a base or alkaline). The vagina is a naturally self-cleansing body part, so douching isn't necessary to keep the vagina clean. Some women chose to use a vinegar and water douche after the end of their period, but this is not necessary. Women who like to douche, however, should do so with products that are unscented. It is not normal to have a vagina that smells like a field of flowers and can you imagine the chemicals used to create that "fragrance"... not good for you at all. If you have a 'strange' odor from you vagina, see a gynecologist!

Wash your vagina when you shower or bath with a gentle soap or cleansing bar. Don't over-do-it or you can irritate the sensitive lining and it is not a pleasant feeling, but it will heal

The vagina is sometimes referred to as the 'front door to life', one day you may even deliver a baby through it. Hard to believe that a baby can fit through that canal, but it can stretch (and tear) and they do. Of course, let’s not forget that the vagina is where you have vaginal sexual intercourse

ORGASM FEMALE

What is an Orgasm in Females and Why All The Mystery?

What is an orgasm? An orgasm is an emotional and physical experience that occurs during a “sexual response cycle”. Before an orgasm, your body becomes increasingly excited. Breathing, heart rate and blood pressure increases. The pupils of the eyes dilate; the lips of the mouth darken, the nipples become erect, the clitoris swells, becomes hard and exposed, (much like the aroused penis). With increased excitement, the skin becomes flushed and it begins to sweat.

In women, the labia, clitoris, vagina and pelvic organs enlarge in very much the same way as the aroused penis enlarges. Sometimes there is a plateau of excitement which is held for several minutes before you are about to orgasm.

Orgasm is the point at which all the tension is suddenly released in a series of involuntary and pleasurable muscular contractions that may be felt in the vagina and/or uterus (some women do experience orgasms without contractions).

The orgasm happens when excitement seems to go over the edge -- a climax or crescendo is reached which may last several seconds or longer. During orgasm the body stiffens and the muscles contract. Involuntary muscle contractions and spasms may occur in various parts of the body, including your legs, stomach, arms, and back. The muscles of the vagina relax and contract rapidly, as do the muscles of the uterus. The glands of the vagina (Bartholin's glands) discharge a watery secretion, which acts to lubricate the vagina.

The main physical changes that occur during a sexual experience are a result of vasocongestion. This is the accumulation of blood in various parts of the body. Muscular tension increases and other changes occur throughout your body also.

Multiple Orgasm in Women
It’s no secret that many women have multiple orgasms. Masters and Johnson documented this occurrence more than 25 years ago. But, do they serve a purpose besides from a pleasurable one? Theories suggest that muscular contractions associated with orgasms pull sperm from the vagina to the cervix, where it's in better position to reach the egg. Researchers believe that if a woman climaxes up until 45 minutes after her lover ejaculates, she will retain significantly more sperm than she does after non-orgasmic sex.

Endorphins

Orgasms cause a release of endorphins into one's spinal fluid. Endorphins are also somewhat responsible for the emotion of happiness, pleasure, calming effect and so on.

The Endorphin Mystery

Many researchers believe that strenuous exercise releases endorphins into the blood stream. Others agree that endorphins are released during orgasm, as well as during laughter. Endorphins are a group of substances formed within the body that naturally relieve pain. They have a similar chemical structure to morphine. In addition to their analgesic affect, endorphins are thought to be involved in controlling the body's response to stress, regulating contractions of the intestinal wall, and determining mood.

It also seems that endorphin stimulation may occur with frequent sex and masturbation. These are the belief of many researchers, we are just providing you with the information, you decide if you want to impress the biology class with this knowledge, or whomever.

There is no evidence that too much sex (or exercise or laughter, for that matter) and consequential elevated levels of endorphins have any kind of endorphin depletion effect -- that is depletion of bodily endorphins, which could lead to depression. It is believed that endorphins are "recycled" by the body as are other brain chemicals. There currently is research being done to evaluate the full range of endorphins' functions in the body, especially how they relate to the prevention of illness and their beneficial affects in cancer and depressed patients.

What's The Difference Between Clitoral and Vaginal Orgasms?

The difference between a "clitoral" and a "vaginal" orgasm is where you are being stimulated to achieve orgasm, not where you feel the orgasm. This may clear up some of the confusion around this common question. The clitoris has a central role in elevating feelings of sexual tension. During sexual excitement, the clitoris swells and changes position. The blood vessels through the whole pelvic area also swell, causing engorgement and creating a feeling a fullness and sexual sensitivity. Your inner vaginal lips swell and change shape. Your vagina balloons upward, and your uterus shifts position in your pelvis.

For some women, the outer third of their vagina and the cervix are also very sensitive or even more sensitive than the clitoris. When stimulated during intercourse or other vaginal penetration, these women do have intense orgasms. This would be what is referred to as a vaginal orgasm -- without clitoral stimulation. (Sigmund Freud made a pronouncement that the "mature" woman has orgasms only when her vagina, but not her clitoris, is stimulated). This of course, made the man's penis central to a woman's sexual satisfaction.

In reality, orgasms are a very individual experience and there is no one correct pattern of sexual response. Whatever feels wonderful to you, makes you feel alive and happy, AND connected with your partner is what matters. Enjoy!

Learning how to masturbate often helps a woman orgasm when she is with her partner;

HOW TO MASTURBATE FEMALE

How To Masturbate For Women

How do women masturbate? Most women orgasm from stimulation of the clitoris. Many others can only orgasm from vaginal penetration or G-Spot stimulation. Remember, there is no wrong or right way to masturbate, everyone is different and we all respond differently.

First, Relax as much as you can. Ensure your privacy; lock your door, turn off the phone, make sure you are alone. Find a comfortable position. Most women start out lying on their backs, legs bent and spread apart, with feet on the bed or floor. Remove some or all of your clothing; whatever feels right for you.

2. Explore your body. Run your hands along all parts of your body, lingering along areas that are more responsive to touch than others. Many women have very sensitive nipples and can orgasm from nipple stimulation alone. Look at your genitals in a mirror if that is “your thing” -- if you feel shy about that -- that’s okay too. Caress the different parts to see what feels extra good to you. You'll know it when you find it. Touch your inner and outer labia, your clitoris, your vagina and your perineum.

3. Touch. Using one or two fingers, rhythmically stroke the different parts of your vulva, paying particular attention to your clitoris and labia. Use your fingers to pull your vulva apart and gently open your vagina. Experiment with different types of pressure, speed and motion. Try placing a finger on either side of the clitoris and stroking up and down, or placing two fingers on the clitoral hood and rubbing in a circular motion. Place a finger in your vagina and experiment from there.

4. Experiment. Try different types of touch: stroke, knead, pinch, or lightly pull your genitals and nipples. Try using one or several fingers, or the palm of your hand. You'll find out what you prefer.

5. Fantasize. Recall an exciting previous sexual encounter or focus on that guy you have a crush on. If you need some extra help, look at a sexy magazine, think about your dream-date or read an erotic story. Allow your mind to wander.

6. Build up. Learn to hold onto sexual excitement by building up and then reducing or temporarily stopping the stimulation. Pay attention to how your body is responding. It will tell you the particular stroke that feels best and when to pick up or slow down the tempo.

7. Breathing. Breathing is important to excitement. Breathe deeply rather than hold your breath. This helps release the sexual energy, rather than fight it. Rock your pelvis as you would during intercourse. Rhythmically clench and release your PC muscle (inserting a vibrator can help too).

8. Going over the edge. If your hand gets tired, give yourself a rest, switch hands, or try a vibrator. If you're on the brink of orgasm, but can't quite get there, try altering your breathing, or focusing on a really hot fantasy. Give yourself extra stimulation: caress your nipples, or try also thrusting your other fingers or a dildo in and out of your vagina. (But, don't overdo it either).

9. Ride the wave and enjoy. As you begin to orgasm, continue the stimulation lightly through the orgasm, or stop if it feels like it's too intense. Lighten up on the stimulation during the first extremely sensitive moments but keep it going to enjoy those little pleasurable aftershocks. Your first orgasm may feel like a blip or a blast, but the more you practice, the more variety you will experience.

10. Don't worry. If you don't orgasm on your first try. Keep practicing, or try some of the variations below. Practice the breathing technique making sure you are breathing from your belly, but don't pass out.

Practice, practice, practice. With a bit of time you will orgasm! If you are get sore, give yourself some time to heal.

Benefits from masturbation:

Masturbation can help relieve stress and:

Relieve menstrual cramps

Makes many people calmer in general -- and they tend to smile more :)

MALE ORGASM

The period of emission and ejaculation is called the male orgasm. Penile erection involves a complex interaction between three systems of the body: the vascular system, the nervous system, and the endocrine system.

Erection

Although much research has been done on erectile function and dysfunction, many aspects of function still remain unclear. (Even with the invention of those blue pills you have seen advertised on TV.)

Erection results from dilation of the arteries in the penis and an increase in arterial blood under high pressure -- to simplify things a bit. This causes the erectile tissue in the penis to become engorged. Erection also most likely involves several neurotransmitters.

Orgasm

With increasing intensity of the sexual stimulus, the reflex centers of the spinal cord begin to emit impulses that leave the cord to the genitals and initiate emission, which is the forerunner of ejaculation. Fluid from the vas deferens, the prostate, the ampulla, and the seminal vesicles (and even more tiny glands) are propelled into the internal urethra by contractions of the groin muscles*. The filling of the internal urethra elicits signals that are transmitted through the pudendal nerves from the spinal cord. Increases in pressure in the urethra cause the semen to be propelled to the exterior, resulting in ejaculation! The period of emission and ejaculation is termed male orgasm. After ejaculation erection ceases within 1 to 2 minutes in most males.

Hormonal Role?

It is apparent that sexual desire and performance depend on some threshold level of testosterone, however, this level varies from man to man. One of the greatest inhibitors of sexual functioning in males is loss of or low self-esteem and the development of a negative self-image.

Bulbocavernous muscles & ischiocavernous muscles. (for those that want to know). Bulbocavernous muscles are at the very base of the penis, the others are deeper in the groin around the penis.

ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION:

Ten Facts on Erectile Dysfunction

1. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common problem.

2. ED is defined as the repeated inability to sustain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse.

3. ED may be caused by physical factors, psychological factors or by medications.

4. ED may be caused by a problems in any of the components of the body that are required to produce an erection. These include:

Nerve impulses originating in the brain
Conduction of nerve impulses down the spinal cord
Conduction of nerve impulses between the spinal cord and the penis
Arteries and veins that supple the penis
The fibrous, muscular and vascular structures of the penis

5. Some common diseases are associated with an increased risk of erectile dysfunction. As some diseases progress, the disease will impact the function of nerves, blood vessels, vascular, and muscular structures of the penis.

6. Diseases associated with an increased risk of ED include diabetes, kidney disease, chronic alcoholism, vascular disease, multiple sclerosis, atherosclerosis.

7. In some cases, ED may be an early signal of heart or blood vessel disease.

8. Between 35 and 50 percent of men with diabetes experience ED.

9. Making an appointment with your physician or health care provider is the first step in the evaluation and treatment of ED.

10. ED can be treated!

Types of Erectile Disorders

There are four areas of normal sexual function -- libido (desire), erection, ejaculation and orgasm. Problems in these areas can occur separately or in combination. Erectile dysfunction can often affect libido and ejaculation, especially when the erectile dysfunction persists.

The following table highlights the various causes of sexual dysfunction (excluding impotence). Each problem, regardless of cause is potentially treatable. When due to erectile dysfunction, they may resolve spontaneously when the erection problem is successfully treated, if not they need to be addressed separately.

WET DREAMS FOR BOYS:

What Are “Wet Dreams” (Nocturnal Emissions)?

A wet dream is the uncontrolled ejaculation of semen from the penis during sleep. The fluid is creamy to clear in color.

What Causes Them?

Wet dreams are caused by sexual excitement from dreams, and or by physical stimulation like rubbing against blankets, the bed, or a full bladder. It is very normal!

Who Gets Them?

Guys get them! When boys enter puberty a lot of hormonal changes occur. These changes will result in many, but not all boys experiencing episodes of spontaneous erections during sleep, during the day and wet dreams. If these episodes do occur there is no need to worry or feel guilty because they are part of normal sexual development.

Most boys experience wet dreams between the ages of 12 to 18. Generally boys have less wet dreams once they start masturbating or once puberty is over. Also if teenagers become sexually active will experience fewer, or no longer have wet dreams.

What Do They Mean?

Wet dreams are a normal part of the many things that are changing in the body during puberty. Not all boys have wet dreams and that's okay too, it doesn't mean anything is wrong with you. If you do have a wet dream, it just means your body is maturing sexually, which is a step towards becoming an adult.

ABOUT MEN

Many guys know very little about their growth and development. This forum has articles and videos to help you learn about your body and soul and ways for you to maintain and attain wellness.

Guys rarely have the opportunity to discuss their issues openly and without embarrassment, even among their friends or health care providers. As a result many have no idea what is “normal”, common, natural, or even possible for their own bodies.

PENIS PROBLEMS:

Penis Problems and Conditions

Here are five penis conditions that you should know about if you own a penis or if you care about one!

Men with penis problems usually only seek medical attention because of painful erections and or difficulty with intercourse.

Peyronie's Disease

Peyronie's Disease is acquired in adult life rather than at birth (like hypospadias). It is caused by the formation of hard plaque on one on the upper or lower side of the penis in layers containing erectile tissue. The local inflammation eventually develops into a full scar. This scar tissue is hard and inflexible, and causes the penis to bend when erect. The effects of this bend are far less noticeable when the penis is in a flaccid state.

This affliction leaves the penis bent distinctly in some direction. Often, the angle is in excess of 45 degrees and results in serious pain during erection and the impossibility of normal sexual intercourse. If your straight path, but your gentle curve is not necessarily Peyronie's Disease.

There is no need to worry about a curved penis unless the curve suddenly appeared and/or you're penis has experienced some sort of trauma.

Unfortunately, symptoms of the disease may develop methodically or overnight. Overnight appearances are usually due to some sort of serious penile trauma, but not always. If you think that you have Peyronie's Disease, then I highly recommend that you see your health care provider who may refer you to a urologist.

Hypospadias

Hypospadias is a congenital disorder of the penis, an abnormality that may affect up to 1 out of every 400 - 500 male infants. Instead of having a urethral opening at the end of the penis, boys born with hypospadias have an opening on the underside of the shaft of their penis. If this causes a problem with urination, the condition can be surgically corrected. About 10% of boys born with this defect may also have undescended testicles.

Surgery is most often performed before the child reaches school age. The surgery involves creating a tube to extend the urethra to the end of the penis. The original hole is most often left as it is since the urethra now bypasses it. Although the penis has two holes, only one is functional. Otherwise it should be a normal functioning penis.

Priapism

Priapism Is an involuntary prolonged or painful erection that can persist for hours, days and is not associated with sexual arousal. It can occur at any age and is a true emergency with risks of subsequent impotency. Primary priapism is the result of trauma or infection. Secondary causes include sickle cell disease, spinal cord injury and stroke. Various medications can also contribute to this condition.

Phimosis

Phimosis refers to a tightening of the skin of the foreskin that prevents retraction over the glans. There are two typical forms of this tightness, an infant phimosis and the phimotic ring or band.

An infant phimosis has an easily recognizable tubular form, this is common and healthy in infants but occasionally will continue into adulthood. The adult phimosis is a thin contour of skin tissue located towards the front of the inner foreskin and it narrows the opening of the foreskin. A phimotic ring can make retraction of the foreskin over and behind the glans impossible, painful, or difficult, the foreskin may even get stuck behind the glans. This condition is often treated by circumcision, however, there are less invasive procedures depending upon the degree of phimosis, see several urologists for opinions if you have this condition.

For 'simple' phimosis stretching of the foreskin may be a method for treatment, or a method that may work. Steroids and surgery are other options.

Large Penis Veins

It’s normal for men to have prominent veins on their penis. For some men, sometimes the appearance of veins is a result of poorly functioning valves in their testicles. If you see your veins changing in size or color, see a urologist.

TESTICULAR SELF EXAM---- FOR BOYS

Cancer of the testicles accounts for only about one percent of all cancers in men. It is however, the most common type of cancer in males ages 16 to 35, and can occur anytime after age fifteen.

Often, only one testicle is affected. The cause of testicular cancer is still unknown. Risk factors include:

Uncorrected undescended testicles in infants and young children. (Parents should make sure that their infant boys are checked at birth for undescended testicles.)

A family history of testicular cancer. (If you don’t know, ask.)

Having an identical twin with testicular cancer.

Injury to the scrotum or to a testicle.

It’s five times more common among Caucasian than Black males.

What is Testicular Self-Exam? (TSE)

The TSE is a method for guys and men to check their testicles to make sure there aren't any unusual bumps or lumps, which may be the first sign of testicular cancer. Sometimes cancer of the testicles will spread, so it’s very important to detect it early so that the cancer doesn't become more serious. The Tour de France winner and great cyclist Lance Armstrong beat testicular cancer, but he ignored symptoms for a long time and nearly died from it since it spread so much.

How Do I Do A TSE?

Check yourself right after a hot shower. The skin of the scrotum is then relaxed and soft.

Become familiar with the normal size, shape and weight of your testicles.
Using both hands, gently roll each testicle between your fingers.

Identify the epididymis. This is a rope-like structure on the top and back of each testicle. This structure is NOT an abnormal lump.

Be on the alert for a tiny lump under the skin, in front or along the sides of either testicle. A lump may remind you of a piece of uncooked rice or a small cooked pea.

Report any swelling to your health care provider.

If you have any lumps or swelling, it does not necessarily mean you have cancer, but you must be checked by your health care provider. If detected and treated early , testicular cancer is one of the most curable cancers.

Warning Signs of A Problem

In the early stages, testicular cancer may have no symptoms. When there are symptoms, they include: Small, painless lump in a testicle.

Enlarged testicle.

Feeling of heaviness in the testicle or groin.

Pain in the testicle.

A change in the way the testicle feels.

Enlarged male breasts and nipples.

Blood or fluid that accumulates suddenly in the scrotum.

Remember that testicular cancer is highly curable, especially when detected and treated early. Testicular cancer almost always occurs in only one testicle and the other testicle is all that is needed for full sexual function.

Routine testicular self-exams are important, but they cannot substitute for a health care provider's examination. That person should examine your testicles when you have a physical exam. You can also ask them to teach you the correct way to do a TSE.
